Few things feel better than a bowl of piping hot soup on a cold day. As the northern hemisphere of the world is transitioning to winter once again, the temperatures are plunging. This means that it is time to get out your crock pot or large pot and make yourself some homemade soup! There are many different advantages to making your own soup. Here are a few benefits plus a delicious recipe to get you started.
Soup keeps you Hydrated:
Many people are chronically dehydrated, which can result in a host of health problems like migraines, heart palpitations, and eventual kidney failure. Keeping yourself hydrated by using a largely water-based soup will reduce cravings, keep you full on less calories, and keep your body functioning properly.
You Control what is in it:
By creating your own soup, you are able to make it your own, changing it to suit your particular taste and dietary needs. This means that you can reduce the amount of sodium, calories, and fat that you consume when you make your own homemade version. It's a lot better than buying canned soup, often full of additives to extend the product’s shelf life, but harmful for people to consume.
A Great way to use up Leftovers:
Many of us make meals and have leftovers that may end up getting tossed after sitting for several days untouched. For versatile foods like meats and vegetables, throw some of these into a pot of broth made from a bouillon cube and you have a quick meal! In addition with soup, you can easily put the excess in containers and freeze it until you are ready to consume it.
Soups contain Healthy Ingredients:
If you aren’t a veggie fan, you can use soup to get the nutrition that you need without the taste that you don’t enjoy. You can also pack a soup full of several servings of veggies and enjoy them in a way that doesn’t seem as overwhelming, compared to if you were to eat the vegetables raw.
Lots of Variety:
Soup is incredibly easy, but there is also a thousand ways to make it. You could have soup for an entire week, but because of all the choices available you would never get bored. Having homemade soup gives you even more options because you can add all the different spices that you like while gaining the health benefits from them.
